Our ten-room hotel in Tropea, Calabria gets
a separate post for its combination of
luxuries and minor annoyances. It’s name,
Sui Generis, is excellent. It is the very ambitious
project of two brothers who are in the construction
business. It had good
indoor parking. It was well located for
walking into the old town (about ten minutes)
although the curvy “highway” section at the
start could be a little nerve-wracking.
The quality of
its construction, in modifying an old castle,
was also outstanding.
The shower was
excellent.
The room cleaning and towel
changing were excellent. The bed was
good. The lighting was good. The view
from the balcony was good.
The pillows
were too hard, particularly when compared
to the down pillows at the Saint Petri hotel
in Copenhagen. The daytime desk clerk was
worse than useless, twice directing us to
restaurants which turned out to be closed
for lunch. Happily, the first time that
happened, I demanded and received liquid
refreshment of some sort as compensation.
The hotel provided a bottle of good French
champagne long with some nice pastries.
The second time I let it go.
The evening desk clerk was much better,
particularly on the night I spent three hours
trying and failing to get the flat tire on our
rental car fixed or the car replaced by Avis.
She also was helpful in arranging drivers
for our trip to the caves of Zungri and for
our connection to the train station in
Lamezia for the homebound leg to
Rome/Copenhagen. (That was a delight,
a superfast, comfortable train running along
the coast for half of the four-hour trip.)
The lack of a telephone in the room was
inconsistent with the advanced electronic
room key system and the electronic “do not
disturb” and “clean the room” indicators.
On the last morning, with our suitcases
already downstairs and only our backpacks
left in the room, the electronic entry system
failed and they had to bring a metal key to
get us into the room for the last time.
It was annoying to have to go down two
flights and then up two flights, all outdoors,
to reach the poolside breakfast room,
particularly when it was raining.
It was
annoying, for the first four or five days,
to have to have the staff give us the items
we pointed to on the breakfast buffet.
That procedure was eliminated for the last
few days. The buffet itself was quite good.
All in all I would recommend the hotel. I
don't think a better one can be found in Tropea.
