Packing It In

Our return flight was from Copenhagen

to Newark. We made the most of the last

two days. On Day One we left Tropea

with a taxi ride to Lamezia where we

caught a fast four-hour train to Rome.

We stayed overnight at the very nice

Hotel Barocco on Piazza Barberini.

That afternoon and the next morning

we walked all around Rome,

the main shopping streets and the sights.

We made two major purchases, a small

hairbrush and a package of dried porcini.

Rome is still a treasure house of
elegant products, inedible and edible.

The streets were packed with tourists.

We managed to see a good number of

the famous sights.

A column by a Roman somebody who
conquered a lot of territory.

A needle.

Trevi Fountain

"World leaders" showed up after our visit.

On Day Two we flew to Copenhagen, checked

into an airport hotel,

Atrium Of the Clarion Hotel, a 400-room
hotel directly connected to the arrival terminal,
a tremendous convenience in our circumstances.

View from airport hotel room, showing metro train
and central Copenhagen on the horizon.

showered and took the metro

to a celebratory dinner at AOC restaurant

(celebrating our survival of a very strenuous

and ultimately very satisfying trip.)

Not all dishes were photographed.

Bread, too!

Perhaps the claws should be wrapped
in gold foil or fruit leather booties.

On the following day we flew to Newark.

COPENHAGEN - A Test For My Memory

Now recuperating in New York I am
going through the photos, selecting a
few I find interesting and may have left
out of previous posts and testing my
memory to see if I can identify them.

The view from our table at Geranium

A full size copy of Michelangelo's David,
donated by the Carlsberg beer tycoon Jacobson.

Inside the King's theater where we
saw Twyla Tharp's Come Fly Away.

Rosenborg Castle - guarded home of
crown jewels and still used for state
occasions. Throne room and
tapestry detail shown below.
Note tourist and guard in center.

Note tourist seated in center.

A version of the tower of Babel. Not by Breughel.

Rose garden of Rosenborg Castle.

The Danish butter cookies which
inundated the American market are
hard to find in Copenhagen.

Lovely pin on display in either Rosenborg or Helsingor.

Amusement ride at Tivoli
(which we did not visit)

Blankets for patrons at bar
near our hotel.

Calabria

A one-day train strike has prevented us

from taking a day trip to Scilla, legendary home

of the  Scylla of Scylla and Charybdis

in Greek mythology, two immortal monsters

who endangered the hero Odysseus

in the Odyssey. This has given me a chance

to report on Tropea and Calabria, following

the nightmare drive from Lamezia airport

six days ago. On our first full day we started

with a drive to the Musaba "museum" near

Mammarola, an odd but sublime choice.

A worthy rival to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Walls of mosaics depicting myths

A tip from the cashier at MUSABA led

us to Taverna del Borgo in Mammarola for lunch

one of our happiest discoveries, a generous

and authentic restaurant where we had three

different dishes featuring fresh porcini mushrooms,

accompanied by grated reggiano parmesan and

local smoked cheese in a grating device,

a true culinary pleasure. Finished with gratis

housemade liqueurs, licorice and mandarin orange.

On the following day we went to Gerace

and learned much about road closures.,

well-preserved medieval towns and fantastic

panoramas.

Coming and going we ran into unannounced

road blockages,
