As the excerpt from Wikipedia below explains, the hyrax is one of the most vicious rodents in the world. It is related to elephants and, in fact, is the only animal feared by elephants due to its size, speed and fearlessness. The hyrax identifies humans by their arms and hands. That is why, if you have enough nerve, you can approach closely by keeping both arms and hands behind your back. In that case the hyrax dosn't know what you are and leaves you alone.

The Wikipedia article on hyraxes actually states that they are not, in fact, rodents, although, that assumption is easily understood, given their appearance. They are related to elephants, amazingly.
