Day 2 on La Maddalena

On the second full day Emma drove all over Maddalena and its connected island, Caprera. The highlight was a 1 hour 15 minute hike on Caprera. It was narrow and steep, requiring hiking sticks. But it rewarded us with excellent views of a number of bays and beaches. On the way back the predicted rain arrived. An abandoned stone hut gave us a good place to put on our rain jackets and finish the hike before it became too slippery.

Back in town lunch at Sotto Vente (recommended by Joel as the best in a town that really doesn't maintain traditional cooking - possibly because it was a NATO base for a very long time.) It was good but not what we have become used to.

After a period of rest we went to the store where Emma had seen bathing suits only to suffer a big disappointment. It was unexpectedly closed.

And so to the supermarket for Sicilian plum tomatoes and Ecuadorian bananas for future supplemental nourishment.

In Garibaldi Plaza a descendant of his sits next to his statue.

The photos are authentic.

When instructions proved too difficult, the driver in front said "Follow me."

At Garibaldi's house/museum on Caprera a book seller showed some remnants of a NATO presence.

Excellent stone on Caprera

  1. That photo of the sundry wheels of cheese being sold at the Farmers' Market is great -- they look delicious!
