Alghero to La Maddalena

We left Alghero, heading north,  with the intention of stopping at the hilltop town of Castelsardo, then on to a special rock landscape at Capo Testa near Santa Teresa di Gallura and finally to Palau  where we would get the ferry to La Madalenna, the main island of an archipelago fo 3 nights. And so it was, although we didn't expect the difficulty we had getting to the top of Castelsardo. Nor did we anticipate the extensiveness of the rock formations at Capo. [Nor the stress of the first attempt to get there when the car guidance system directed us into a narrow dirt road only to find it absolutely impossible, do a difficult turn around and then have a van approach from the front and have to back up to a point where it could pass - a nightmare!] Another approach to Capo Testa balanced the nightmare with a dreamy landscape.
Having learned that the car's guidance system, as sophisticated as it is, sometimes takes us on unsuitable road we are now taking that into account, double checking it on our map and sometimes overruling it.
A rare truck in front of us on the road to Castelsardo. The 50km speed limit is usually observed at 70 or 80 km on good roads like this.

The so-called "Elephant Rock" which we did not visit

Castelsardo with the castle and old town on top.

It's a very steep old town.

Restaurants in odd spots

  1. So, I see from Google Maps that you're at the North part of Sardinia, taking this ferry... :)

  2. I love a good narrow, staired street in an old town. Very picturesque.
