Mekong Delta, Vietnam

In a little more than 24 hours we had a total immersion in the Mekong Delta - more than enough to experience its major characteristics, which include many rivers and bridges, lots of buzzing motor boats and mosquitoes and extreme heat and humidity. Plus  a room in the traditional Mekong style where you could hear every sound within a kilometer, including the conversation of all the guests in the other four rooms. Plus, the first big rains in four months, welcome to the farmers and not at all disturbing to this tourist who rather enjoyed cruising down the river in a primitive wooden boat in the rain. All in all, the right amount of time and activity for us.

The taxi driver who drove us from Saigon was stopped for speeding in Can Tho, our destination city. The police office was a flimsy shack on the side of the road. We don't know any more details because our driver spoke absolutely no English.
Our room at the aptly named Nguyen Shack was a classic Mekong structure of bamboo and woven matting
