A Relatively Easy Day

Boat ride to an island across the water, swimming pool, lunch in Dambulla and a visit to a pink rock mountain.
The hotel didn't tell us the boat would be a platform on two pontoons paddled by two men sitting on the back of the pontoons. And the winds (I estimate approximately 25 knots) almost kept us from coming back. They had to push the boat along the shore of the island to get to a point where we could safely go back across the water to the hotel.
The "largest red quartz mountain in Asia" shows up nice and pink in all the posters but was just barely blushing in spots in reality. Nevertheless the two-kilometer walk through a forest getting there was very nice. And the air-conditioning in our car was heavenly on the way back.

The Kandalama Hotel continues to be a source of pleasure.

Turn right at the Buddha for the road to Hotel Kandalama.
Many kilometers of dirt road, stray dogs frequent
Many staff, courteous if not always competent.
Hotel Kandalama is an architectural masterpiece by the late Geoffrey Bawa, running a kilometer, A to C. We were at point B, most convenient to restaurant, main entrance and one of three pools.
Hotel blends into rock mountain beautifully

Sigiriya Rock as seen from our room
Monkeys are cute but balcony door must be locked against them because they can trash the room in search for food..
Some canny guests keep their snacks in the safe
Infinity pool with lake beyond
Rocks penetrate the building at many points.
Interesting sculptures abound

But the 2-kilometer forest walk to get there was very nice.
Hotel boat was rather crude.
Two paddlers had a hard time getting us back against a strong wind.
Tomorrow we move on to Tea Country in central Sri Lanka, the Tea Factory Hotel in Nurawa Eliya
