Today we moved from Funchal to Porto Moniz, a small resort town in the northwest of Madeira, an hour by taxi. We had seen it on one of our day trips and thought it would make a nice place to spend the last four days of our Madeira stay - the four days that Boutique Hotel Se in Funchal could not accommodate us. Emma stopped counting at 26 tunnels on the trip to Porto Moniz. It's a real lava fest. Fascinating formations along the shore. Many tourist buses during the day but quiet in the evening.

The morning started with Emma spotting the arrival of a 5000 passenger cruise ship from our window, one of only two that arrived during our stay.

On our walk around town after breakfast we got a better view of the monstrosity.

We also passed a cannabis shop

And the totally stoned town beach

At the entrance to our hotel in Porto Moniz a collection of scenic photos made it unnecessary to leave the hotel.

But we left anyway to see the plants attack the lava and impressive lava engineering

And humans swim in lava pools

Coral visible within - and fish, too hard to photograph

Good reflections

Further up into the hills

A section of lava pools which have been artificially made more accessible

Unmodified lava
