Ngorongoro Crater

[Trying one more post from Stonetown, Zanzibar. A one-day trip we made while
 at Kakessio camp]

An ancient crater,12 kilometers across I think, has a special concentration of animals, somewhat isolated from the rest of Tanzania and specially regulated and controlled. This makes it a good place to see a variety in a short trip. And, since off-road driving is prohibited the animals are not as skittish as they may be elsewhere, allowing closer proximity to some.

We went there for a day. Due to time constraints I'll describe the pictures here rather than waiting for them to upload and then writing captions. T get there we drove through highlands filled with Masai and their cattle. They live in round houses. Unlike the more difficult areas they do not surround the house groups with thorny acacia branches to protect them from predators. (Elsewhere they bring their animals into the thorn protected enclosure every night.)

Unusual shot of hippo floating on its back with pink stomach visible.

Eland- very shy and hard to find due to being the most desirable meat
