The First Two Days

I think I have neglected the first two days of our trip to Tanzania. We were based in the Hatari Lodge near Mount Kilimanjaro.
Our guide Mokili, one of the few Masai who have been certified as guides. The Mercedes is not often seen as the safari vehicle.
The rare, arboreal, three-horned chameleon which took refuge on our vehicle after apparently falling from a tree during a battle with a snake.

A fruit whose name escapes me.

Army ants on the march.

We grew accustomed to exchanging waves with Masai cattle herders, mostly children.

This gives a good sense of the terrain. Adult Masai often wear a woven red blanket, reminiscent of a Scottish plaid.

Mount Kilimanjaro is rarely seen clearly , just like that other iconic mountain, Fuji.

Flavorful interior of main tent at Shu'mata Camp, the sister camp of Hatari.

Lunch table at Shu'mata. Camp manager at head of table has devoted his life to the rehabilitation of mistreated elephants.
